For 24 hours after you buy an American ticket, you can change it or cancel it for a refund, Basic Economy included, as long as you booked at least 7 days before departure. If the price drops in that window, book the cheaper fare first to lock it in, then cancel the original on aa.com or in the app. After 24 hours, refunds to your card are off the table.
Main Cabin and higher fares change with no fee when the trip starts in North or South America. Trips that start anywhere else can cost up to $400 to change. Make the change yourself on aa.com or in the app: American can charge $50 when its Reservations team helps with a change over the phone.
Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed. AAdvantage members can cancel one for a Trip Credit minus a fee: $99 within the 48 contiguous states, $129 for Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, $199 for long-haul trips. Your AAdvantage number must be on the booking before you cancel, and you must cancel online before the first flight.
After the first 24 hours, the difference comes back as a Trip Credit, not cash. AAdvantage members who cancel online with their number on the booking get 12 months to use it. Everyone else gets 6. Unlike most airline credits, a Trip Credit can pay for a flight for anyone, not just the original traveler.
