Does Capital One Travel refund you when your rate drops?

Yes, if your booking can still be cancelled for a full refund: book the lower rate, then cancel the original, and you keep the difference. On a non-refundable rate, Capital One Travel’s Price Match Guarantee may cover a lower price you find on another site, if you claim within 24 hours of booking.

The rules of the game

The fundamentals

Four things every traveler needs to know about hotel price drops before deciding whether to claim one.

Refundable vs non-refundable rates

Every hotel reservation falls into one of two buckets. A refundable rate can be cancelled up to the property's free-cancellation deadline for a full cash refund to your card. A non-refundable rate cannot be cancelled at all once booked. Only refundable rates can be repriced via the cancel-and-rebook path. Non-refundable rates are stuck with whatever you paid unless the brand offers a price-match program.

The free-cancellation window

Refundable bookings are cancellable up to a deadline set by the property, typically 24 to 72 hours before check-in. Inside that window you can cancel for free and rebook at the lower rate. Once the deadline passes, the booking becomes effectively non-refundable. Always check the exact deadline on your confirmation email before you commit to a swap.

Best Rate Guarantee programs

Most large hotel brands run a price-match program: Hilton's Price Match Guarantee, Marriott's Best Rate Guarantee, IHG's Best Price Guarantee, Hyatt's Best Rate Guarantee, and similar. These programs let you claim the difference (or a free night) when you find a lower public rate within the program's window. Each program has different rules around timing, qualifying rates, and payout format.

Direct booking versus OTAs

Brand price-match programs almost always require a direct booking through the hotel chain's own site or app. OTA bookings (Expedia, Booking.com, Hotels.com) are usually ineligible because the OTA owns the reservation, not the hotel. If you booked via an OTA, your refund path runs through the OTA's own policy, not the hotel chain's BRG. Check both before you give up on the drop.

After you book

How to catch the next Capital One Travel drop

Prices keep moving after you book. Most people who catch a drop do it by checking the price again and again, and sometimes they get lucky.

Option 1 · The manual way

Check the price yourself

Search your booking on the Capital One Travel app or website every few days. If the price falls below what you paid, the checker above tells you whether it’s worth claiming, and these are the steps.

  1. 1

Find the exact same stay cheaper on a site that shows the price without signing in, such as the site where you found it. The hotel's own site, Expedia and Booking.com are the easiest for agents to check. Compare in US dollars with taxes and fees included

  2. 2

Check the cancellation deadline matches to the day and time. Travelers report denials over small differences, even when the other rate is more flexible

  3. 3

Call Capital One Travel at 844-422-6922 within 24 hours of booking with the other site open, and say you want to file a price match claim

  4. 4

Give your trip ID, the lower price and the website. If the agent can verify it on the call, the refund is authorized then

  5. 5

Keep your original booking. The difference arrives as Capital One Travel credit within a few hours. Find it under My Travel Credits and Offers

Paid as Capital One Travel credit, not cash. If you cancel the original booking, unused credit is voided and spent credit is deducted from your refund. Vacation rentals, packages, and pay-at-hotel Premier or Lifestyle Collection stays are not covered. Travelers report agents refuse some smaller or non-US sites, and won't match a Premier Collection rate with perks against a room-only rate.
