Does Amex Travel refund you when your rate drops?

Yes, if your booking can still be cancelled for a full refund: book the lower rate, then cancel the original, and you keep the difference. On a non-refundable rate, Amex Travel’s Lowest Hotel Rates Guarantee may cover a lower price you find on another site, if you claim before your check-in date.

The rules of the game

The fundamentals

Four things every traveler needs to know about hotel price drops before deciding whether to claim one.

Refundable vs non-refundable rates

Every hotel reservation falls into one of two buckets. A refundable rate can be cancelled up to the property's free-cancellation deadline for a full cash refund to your card. A non-refundable rate cannot be cancelled at all once booked. Only refundable rates can be repriced via the cancel-and-rebook path. Non-refundable rates are stuck with whatever you paid unless the brand offers a price-match program.

The free-cancellation window

Refundable bookings are cancellable up to a deadline set by the property, typically 24 to 72 hours before check-in. Inside that window you can cancel for free and rebook at the lower rate. Once the deadline passes, the booking becomes effectively non-refundable. Always check the exact deadline on your confirmation email before you commit to a swap.

Best Rate Guarantee programs

Most large hotel brands run a price-match program: Hilton's Price Match Guarantee, Marriott's Best Rate Guarantee, IHG's Best Price Guarantee, Hyatt's Best Rate Guarantee, and similar. These programs let you claim the difference (or a free night) when you find a lower public rate within the program's window. Each program has different rules around timing, qualifying rates, and payout format.

Direct booking versus OTAs

Brand price-match programs almost always require a direct booking through the hotel chain's own site or app. OTA bookings (Expedia, Booking.com, Hotels.com) are usually ineligible because the OTA owns the reservation, not the hotel. If you booked via an OTA, your refund path runs through the OTA's own policy, not the hotel chain's BRG. Check both before you give up on the drop.

After you book

How to catch the next Amex Travel drop

Prices keep moving after you book. Most people who catch a drop do it by checking the price again and again, and sometimes they get lucky.

Option 1 · The manual way

Check the price yourself

Search your booking on the Amex Travel app or website every few days. If the price falls below what you paid, the checker above tells you whether it’s worth claiming, and these are the steps.

Recommended
  1. 1

Book the same hotel, dates and room at the lower rate, on AmexTravel.com or on the site where you found it

  2. 2

Forward the new booking's confirmation to plans@plot.travel so Plot keeps watching the right reservation

  3. 3

Open "Manage My Trips" on AmexTravel.com and find your original reservation

  4. 4

Cancel it there, not with the hotel. Points go back to your Membership Rewards account and any card charge is refunded to the card

Open Amex Travel website

Only for rates with free cancellation. Book the new reservation first to lock in the lower rate. Travelers report that cancelling reverses a Platinum hotel credit used on this stay. Rebooking in the same half of the year (January to June or July to December) can earn it again, but rebooking across the two loses the earlier one.

  1. 1

Find the same room, dates and guests at a lower public price, such as on the site where you found it. Compare the room rate before taxes and fees, and check the rate type and the cancellation, change, refund and deposit policies all match

  2. 2

Take an uncropped screenshot showing the hotel, room, dates, guests, cancellation policy and nightly rate before taxes

  3. 3

On AmexTravel.com, open the Lowest Hotel Rates Guarantee claim form. Travelers find it under Customer Service or Help, in the hotel booking FAQs. Phone and chat agents can't file it for you

  4. 4

Enter your itinerary number and the link to the lower rate, attach the screenshot, and submit. If the upload fails, travelers report emailing the same details to lowestrateguaranteed@amextravel.com

File before your check-in date, so a same-day booking can't claim. If you chose Pay Later, you have up to 30 days after the stay, and you may be asked to mail your hotel receipt. Fine Hotels + Resorts, The Hotel Collection, packages, and rooms booked with points or loyalty rates are not covered, and member-only or AAA rates don't count as the lower price. Travelers report that claims are often denied over small room differences, so rebook instead if you can.
