United issues two kinds of travel credit, and they follow different rules: one is for you only and has to be flown by its date, the other anyone can use and only has to be booked by its date. Treat one like the other and the money can expire unused.
This guide covers United’s published rules first, then what travelers on FlyerTalk and Reddit report: where credits hide, the combining trap, and what works before a credit expires.
Future flight credit or travel certificate?
From United’s travel credits page:
| Future flight credit | Travel certificate | |
|---|---|---|
| You get it when | You cancel a ticket, or change to a cheaper flight | You give up your seat, or United offers one as a goodwill gesture |
| Expiry date means | Travel by: your trip must begin before it | Book by: buy the ticket before it |
| Usually lasts | 1 year | 12 months from issue |
| Who can use it | The traveler it was issued to (anyone, if the ticket was bought on or before Aug 31, 2021) | Anyone |
| Look it up with | The original ticket’s confirmation number | Its PIN, from the email it came in |
Both pay for United, United Express and partner flights bought on united.com or in the app, plus some extras like Economy Plus. Neither can be used on MileagePlus award tickets.
How long United travel credits last
United says most credits expire one year after they were issued, and the date is printed on each credit (United’s FAQs). What the date means depends on the type:
- Future flight credit: a travel-by date. Your trip has to begin before it, so book something that leaves in time.
- Travel certificate: a book-by date. Buy the ticket before it, and the flight itself can be later.
The clock doesn’t restart when you cancel
Travelers on FlyerTalk and r/unitedairlines report that a future flight credit’s year runs from the original ticket purchase, and that changing or cancelling again doesn’t reset it. Read the date on the credit rather than counting from the day you cancelled.
One more case: if United cancels your flight or changes it significantly and you don’t want the new one, you’re owed a refund to your card under U.S. Department of Transportation rules. Ask for the refund instead of taking a credit.
How to look up your United travel credit
- MileagePlus members: sign in and open your travel credits. Every credit tied to your account is listed with its value and expiry.
- Not there, or no account: use the search on United’s travel credits page with the confirmation number (future flight credit) or PIN (travel certificate) and your last name.
- Lost the number? The same page can look a credit up by email. Future flight credits use the confirmation number of the original ticket, which is also in the ticket receipts in your MileagePlus account.
Credits from tickets bought through a travel agency have to be used through that agency.
How to use a United travel credit
- Search for flights on united.com or in the United app.
- At payment, choose Travel Credits. Credits in your MileagePlus account appear automatically; tick the ones to use.
- For a credit that isn’t listed, look it up from checkout and add it.
Rules worth knowing before you pay
- Same type only. You can use several future flight credits together, or several certificates, but not a mix.
- Extras only at booking. Credits can pay for Economy Plus, Basic Economy seat assignments and preferred seats, but a future flight credit can’t be added after the ticket is bought.
- Combining can shorten the clock. Travelers report that when several credits go into one booking, any leftover comes back as one credit with the earliest expiry of the group (r/unitedairlines, December 2025). Use the oldest credit on its own if you can.
- Leftover certificate value stays on the same PIN until it’s used up or expires.
Why United credits go missing
What travelers on r/unitedairlines and FlyerTalk report, and what fixed it:
- It isn’t in your account or at checkout. Credits sometimes don’t show in the MileagePlus wallet or the payment list. Enter the original confirmation number, or the 13-digit ticket number starting with 016, directly at payment, or call Reservations (July 2025, February 2026, July 2025).
- The name doesn’t match. A middle name, hyphen or a booking made outside your MileagePlus account can stop a credit linking. An agent can apply it with the ticket number.
- A partly flown international ticket. The leftover value can be hard to use online. Call and ask an agent to reprice it.
Before your United credit expires
United doesn’t extend credits, so plan to use yours in time. What travelers report, from most to least reliable:
- Book a trip that starts before the deadline. For a future flight credit, the trip has to begin before the date.
- Then change it rather than cancel. Travelers on FlyerTalk report booking within the window and later using Change Flight to move the trip further out. Changes on Economy and above have no fee on trips starting in the US.
- Book-and-cancel resets are hit and miss. Some travelers got a newly dated credit by booking with the old one, paying a little extra, and cancelling after 24 hours (r/unitedairlines, October 2025); others report the new credit kept the old date. Cancelling within 24 hours just restores the old credit and its date.
- Ask about a certificate. Some travelers report an agent converting an expiring future flight credit into a travel certificate, which anyone can use and which only needs booking by its date (r/unitedairlines, July 2025). United’s policy doesn’t promise it.
United TravelBank is something else
TravelBank is cash you load into your MileagePlus account to spend on United, often bought to use a credit card’s airline credit. It isn’t a future flight credit or a travel certificate and has its own rules, so check its balance and terms in your MileagePlus account separately.
When the fare drops after you book
United has no price guarantee, but on Economy and above you can change to the same flight at the lower fare with no fee on trips that start in the US, and United gives you the difference as a future flight credit. Basic Economy can’t be changed, and cancelling it returns only part of the fare as credit. Within 24 hours of booking, if you booked at least a week before departure, you can cancel any fare for a full refund. The steps are in Plot’s United price drop guide.
Let Plot watch the flight you book with your credit
Forward your United confirmation and Plot Pro watches the cash fare. When it drops, you get the new price and the steps to take the difference back. Plot doesn’t track your travel credit balances, so keep the original confirmation emails and note the expiry dates.
