If you fly United a lot, you’ve probably had two ways to think about status: how many flights you took, and how much you spent. From 2027, only the second one counts.
United emailed MileagePlus members on October 13, 2026 with the changes, its second big update to the program this year. Silver, Gold and Platinum keep their PQP targets. Premier 1K gets harder. And the small head start every Premier member used to get each January now comes with a United credit card.
Below is the whole thing in plain English, with the numbers checked against United’s own MileagePlus what’s new page.
What changed on October 13, 2026
Segments stop counting
Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) are gone from January 1, 2027. Status is earned on Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) only. This applies to status you earn during 2027, which is the status you hold in 2028.
1K rises to 32,000 PQPs
Up from 28,000 PQPs, or 60 segments plus 22,000 PQPs. Silver, Gold and Platinum stay at 6,000, 12,000 and 18,000 PQPs.
The head start needs a United card
Starter PQPs now go only to members who hold an eligible United co-branded credit card: 5% of what your tier needs. 1K cardholders get 1,600, up from 1,400.
The Club Card cap goes up
The United Club Card and Club Business Card can earn up to 32,000 PQPs a year from spending, up from 28,000, matching the new 1K target.
PlusPoints upgrades get variable pricing
From February 1, 2027, the number of PlusPoints an upgrade costs will vary with demand and availability instead of a fixed chart.
Loose ends from the old rules
Status challenges that started in 2026 and run into 2027 still need their PQFs if PQFs were part of the deal. PlusPoints you used for 2027 PQFs will be refunded, and United says it will contact affected members.
What doesn’t change: the four-flight minimum, the 1 PQP per dollar you earn on United flights, and the PQP-only targets for Silver, Gold and Platinum. If you’ve always qualified on spending alone and you’re below 1K, the only change for you is that the January head start now needs a United card.
United Premier status requirements for 2027
United has four Premier status levels. Here’s each one side by side. “2026 rules” is what you’re qualifying under right now. “2027 rules” is what you’ll need next year to have status in 2028.
| Tier | 2026 rules | 2027 rules |
|---|---|---|
| Premier Silver | 6,000 PQPs, or 15 PQFs + 5,000 PQPs | 6,000 PQPs |
| Premier Gold | 12,000 PQPs, or 30 PQFs + 10,000 PQPs | 12,000 PQPs |
| Premier Platinum | 18,000 PQPs, or 45 PQFs + 15,000 PQPs | 18,000 PQPs |
| Premier 1K | 28,000 PQPs, or 60 PQFs + 22,000 PQPs | 32,000 PQPs |
Every tier also needs at least four paid flights operated by United or United Express in the year. Status you earn in 2026 lasts until January 31, 2028. Sources: United’s announcement and Premier qualification page.
The real change for most people
The PQP-only numbers for Silver, Gold and Platinum didn’t move. What disappeared is the cheaper route: if you used to qualify for Gold with 30 segments and 10,000 PQPs, you now need 12,000 PQPs, 2,000 more than before. At Platinum it’s 3,000 more. At 1K, it’s 10,000 more than the segment route (22,000 to 32,000).
How United PQPs work
A PQP, or Premier Qualifying Point, is United’s way of counting what you spend with it. From 2027 it’s the only number that decides your status, so it’s worth knowing exactly where they come from.
Flights
- 1 PQP per dollar on United and United Express flights, counted on the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges. Taxes and other fees don’t count, so a $412 ticket with $62 of taxes earns 350 PQPs.
- Basic Economy earns PQPs too. United says all Basic Economy tickets earn PQPs and count toward the four-flight minimum.
- Partner flights on Star Alliance and other partners earn PQPs based on how far you fly, not what you pay, with a cap per flight. They don’t count toward the four-flight minimum.
United credit cards
| Card | PQPs from spending | Yearly cap |
|---|---|---|
| United Explorer | 1 PQP per $20 | 1,000 |
| United Quest | 1 PQP per $20 | 18,000 |
| United Club and Club Business | 1 PQP per $15 | 32,000 (was 28,000) |
2027 caps from United’s announcement. On top of spending, Quest cardmembers get 1,000 bonus PQPs a year and Club cardmembers 1,500. Check the card’s own terms before you apply.
Put together: a traveler who spends $9,000 on United fares and $60,000 on a Quest card earns 9,000 + 3,000 = 12,000 PQPs. That’s Gold, as long as four of those flights are on United or United Express.
United 1K requirements: 32,000 PQPs
Premier 1K is where the change bites. In 2026 there were two ways in: 28,000 PQPs, or 60 segments and 22,000 PQPs. In 2027 there’s one: 32,000 PQPs and four United flights.
- If you qualified on spending alone, you need 4,000 more PQPs, about 14% more. That’s roughly $4,000 more in fares, or $60,000 more on a Club card.
- If you used the segment route, you need 10,000 more PQPs than the 22,000 you needed before, about 45% more.
- If you hold a United card and 1K status, you start the year with 1,600 PQPs, so the gap from flying and spending is 30,400.
“reducing flexibility is less than ideal”
Ben Schlappig, One Mile at a Time
One Mile at a Time points out that United is the first of the big three US airlines to raise its bar for 2027, and that 1K now takes more spending than the top published tiers at Delta and American.
The cardholder head start
In 2026, every Premier member (except trial status) got some PQPs deposited at the start of the year, card or no card. From 2027 that head start, which United calls starter PQPs, is for members with an eligible United credit card. It’s 5% of what your current tier needs:
Silver
300
PQPs
Gold
600
PQPs
Platinum
900
PQPs
1K
1,600
PQPs
- The account must be open on December 31, 2026, and still open when the PQPs are deposited.
- Only the primary cardholder gets it, not authorized users.
- You also need Premier status on February 1, 2027.
- The United debit card and trial status don’t qualify.
Who this changes things for
Little changes
You qualify on spending, below 1K. Your numbers are the same, and if you have a United card you still get a head start.
Changes a lot
You fly lots of short, cheap trips and used segments to get there. With 30 flights in a year, Gold used to take 10,000 PQPs. Now it takes 12,000, however many times you fly.
Changes a lot
You’re a 1K, or close. The target goes up by 4,000 PQPs from spending alone, or 10,000 if you used segments.
Worth a look
You have status but no United card. You lose the January head start unless you open an eligible card by December 31.
The earlier 2026 change: fewer miles without a card
This is United’s second MileagePlus update this year. The first, announced in February, changed how many miles you earn (the points you spend on award trips), not status. For tickets issued from April 2, 2026:
| Miles per dollar | Without a United card | With a United card |
|---|---|---|
| General member | 3 (Basic Economy: none) | 6 (Basic Economy: 3) |
| Silver | 5 (Basic Economy: 2) | 8 (Basic Economy: 5) |
| Gold | 6 (Basic Economy: 3) | 9 (Basic Economy: 6) |
| Platinum | 7 (Basic Economy: 4) | 10 (Basic Economy: 7) |
| 1K | 9 (Basic Economy: 6) | 12 (Basic Economy: 9) |
From United’s February 19, 2026 update and earning page. Capped at 75,000 miles per ticket.
Put the two changes together and United is steering the same way twice: status runs on dollars, and miles run on dollars plus a United card. If you fly United regularly without one, both changes are worth a look.
What to do before December 31
- Finish 2026 under the old rules. Segments still count this year. If you’re a few flights short of a tier on the segment route, 2026 is the last year that path exists.
- Decide on a card by December 31. If you already fly enough for status and a United card makes sense for you anyway, opening it before the end of the year gets you the 2027 head start. Don’t open one just for 300 PQPs.
- Run your 2027 number. Add up what you expect to spend on United fares, then add your card PQPs. If you were counting on segments, see where you land on dollars alone.
- Watch the fares you’ve already paid. With status measured in dollars, a United fare that drops after you book is worth catching. More on that next.
When a United fare drops after you book
United fares move after you buy them, sometimes by a lot. On most fares, United lets you take advantage of that. Here’s how it works, from Plot’s United price drop guide:
| When | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Within 24 hours of booking | Book the lower fare, then cancel the original for a full refund to your card (for flights at least 7 days away). |
| Economy and up, after 24 hours | Ask United to reprice the ticket, by chat is quickest. You keep your booking and seats, and the difference comes back as a Future Flight Credit. |
| Basic Economy, after 24 hours | A cancellation fee comes out of the credit, so the drop has to be bigger than the fee to be worth it. |
United Future Flight Credit, briefly
A Future Flight Credit is value from a United ticket that sits in your MileagePlus account for a later booking. When you book, choose it as your payment method. Each credit shows its own expiration date in your account, so check it before you plan around it.
One thing we’re leaving out on purpose: how a reprice or a credit affects your PQPs. United doesn’t spell that out, so check your MileagePlus activity after any change and ask United if the numbers look wrong.
Let Plot watch your United fares
Forward your United confirmation to Plot and Plot Pro watches your exact flight and fare until departure. When it gets cheaper, you get an alert with how much you can get back and the steps for your fare. On United, Plot can claim the credit for you.
