Hilton Price Match Guarantee 2026: What Changed and How to Claim

On August 20, 2026, Hilton rewrote the rules of its Price Match Guarantee. The 25% reward is still there, but you now have to book first, and the lower price has to be one Hilton can check for itself. Here’s what changed, how to claim, and what works better when the price drops.

TL;DR — Key takeaways

  • ✓

Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee still matches a lower price and takes 25% off the room rate. Since August 20, 2026, you have to book directly with Hilton first, then claim within 24 hours.

  • ✓

The lower price must be on a public website, at least 1% cheaper including that site’s booking fees, for exactly the same room, view, guests, dates and cancellation terms.

  • ✓

Prices that need a login, code or app don’t count. Hilton has to find the rate itself when it reviews the claim. Screenshots can’t be used to approve it.

  • ✓

The claim form is online only now, and the name and email must match the reservation. Don’t check in or request a digital key until you hear back.

  • ✓

If Hilton.com itself gets cheaper after you book, the guarantee doesn’t apply. On a refundable rate, book the lower rate, then cancel the original before the deadline.

  • ✓

Points stays are priced by demand, so they can drop too. Advance Purchase rates are non-refundable, with one narrow rebooking exception for Honors Discount rates in North America.

Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee is one of the more generous ones in the hotel world: find the same room cheaper somewhere else and Hilton matches the price, then takes another 25% off. That part hasn’t changed. Almost everything around it has.

For claims filed on or after August 20, 2026, Hilton requires you to book first, dropped the phone route, stopped counting prices that only show up in an app, and made clear that screenshots won’t win a claim. The window is still 24 hours from booking. This guide covers the new rules, how to file, why claims get denied, and the move that works far more often when a Hilton price drops after you book.

What changed on August 20, 2026

This table compares Hilton’s own terms before and after the change: the version for claims filed from August 16, 2024 (archived in July 2026) and the current page, for claims filed from August 20, 2026.

Both versions say a claim can’t be approved once you’ve checked in, in person or digitally. The change was also reported by LoyaltyLobby, Travel Points Pro and View from the Wing.

The change that matters most

Under the old rules you could ask Hilton to match a cheaper price before you committed. Hilton held a tentative reservation at the matched rate and gave you 24 hours to complete it. Now you book first and take the risk. If you book a non-refundable rate to make a claim and the claim is denied, you keep the higher price.

What Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee covers now

You’ll still see it called the Hilton Best Rate Guarantee, its older name. Whatever you call it, these are the current rules from Hilton’s page.

Your booking

  • Booked direct. Hilton.com, the Hilton Honors app, a Hilton call center, the hotel itself, or an accredited travel agent booking through a Hilton channel. Online travel agencies such as Expedia don’t count.
  • Claim within 24 hours of booking, and before you check in. Hilton Honors membership isn’t required.
  • One claim per booking, filed by the guest named on it.

The lower price

  • The same everything: hotel, dates, room type, view, tower or location, floor, amenities, number of guests, deposit, prepay or pay later, and cancellation terms. A better rate elsewhere doesn’t qualify either, even if the difference is in your favor. A matching room name and photos aren’t enough; Hilton says to check the description, amenities, occupancy and terms too.
  • At least 1% cheaper than Hilton’s price, compared on the full stay, not night by night. The other site’s booking or service fees are added to its price. Taxes and hotel-billed resort or destination fees are left out of the comparison.
  • Public and bookable right now, in the hotel’s currency, on a site that isn’t a Hilton channel, and still there when Hilton reviews the claim.

What doesn’t qualify

  • Prices that need a login, membership, credit card number or code to see.
  • Prices that can only be seen in a mobile app.
  • “Mystery hotel” sites that hide the hotel or room until you pay.
  • AAA, AARP, corporate, package, group and event rates.
  • All Hampton by Hilton hotels and Small Luxury Hotels in China, and partner hotels (including Small Luxury Hotels) in Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland.

How to file a Hilton price match claim

  1. Book directly with Hilton. Pick a rate whose terms match the cheaper one exactly. If you can, choose a refundable rate, so a denied claim doesn’t leave you stuck.
  2. Check the lower price on a desktop browser, signed out. Confirm the room name, bed type, view, guests, dates, deposit, payment timing and cancellation deadline all match. Go to the last step before payment and note the total, including any booking fee.
  3. Make sure the gap is more than 1% of the full stay. On a $600 stay, that’s more than $6.
  4. Open the claim form within 24 hours of booking. It starts with your confirmation number, last name and arrival date. Use the same name and email as on the reservation.
  5. Give Hilton the exact link and details of the lower price. Save a dated screenshot for your own records, but know it won’t get the claim approved. Hilton has to find the rate itself.
  6. Don’t check in or request a digital key until you’ve had an answer. A claim still waiting at check-in can’t be approved.
  7. Wait for the new confirmation email. The lower price only applies once Hilton emails a confirmation showing it. After that, don’t change dates, guests or room type, because a change can cancel the match.

What a win looks like

Say you book three nights on Hilton.com for a $600 room total and find the same room for $570 on another site. If Hilton approves, it matches $570 and takes 25% off the room rate, so the room comes to about $427.50 before taxes. That’s roughly $170 saved, which is why people keep trying.

Why Hilton price match claims get denied

Most denials come down to one of a few things. Some come straight from Hilton’s terms; others are what members report.

  • The price was gone when Hilton checked. Hilton reviews the rate when it gets to your claim, not when you saw it. Members in FlyerTalk’s long-running Hilton Best Rate Guarantee thread report this as the most common way to lose, and under the new terms a screenshot can’t rescue it.
  • The terms didn’t match. A prepaid rate against pay-at-hotel, a different cancellation deadline, a deposit on one and not the other, or a “partial” view. Members report denials for each of these, including cancellation deadlines that differ only slightly.
  • Fees closed the gap. Hilton adds the other site’s booking or service fees to its price, but leaves the hotel’s resort or destination fees out of the comparison. A saving that looked like 2% on screen can end up under the 1% minimum, so do the math on the final checkout totals.
  • A small extra on the other rate. In a case a reader sent LoyaltyLobby in November 2025, a guest found a Zurich hotel for CHF 331 on the Small Luxury Hotels site against CHF 361 on Hilton.com. Hilton first said it couldn’t confirm availability, then denied the claim because the other site planted two trees per night booked, which made the rates “different.”
  • Hilton couldn’t confirm the booking. The terms allow a denial if the other site can’t confirm a reservation at the advertised price straight away.
  • The price needed a login, code or app. Member-only prices never counted, and since August 2026 prices that only appear in an app don’t either.
  • Timing. Filed more than 24 hours after booking, or not reviewed before check-in.
  • Paperwork. A different name or email on the claim, or a booking made through an online travel agency.

None of this means Hilton never pays. Members do report successful claims, and LoyaltyLobby’s author says he had one in 2025. But the claim is a narrow window with many ways to miss, so it works best as a bonus, not a plan.

Hilton price drop after booking: what works instead

Here’s the gap most people miss. The Price Match Guarantee only compares Hilton against other websites, and only for 24 hours. If the price on Hilton.com itself falls next week, the guarantee has nothing to say about it.

What does work is rebooking. Hilton’s own FAQ says that if your reservation can still be cancelled, you can cancel it and book again at the current price. On a flexible rate:

  1. Book the cheaper rate first. Same hotel, room and dates, and a rate you can still cancel.
  2. Then cancel the original in your Hilton account, before its cancellation deadline. The deadline is set by the hotel and shown in your confirmation.
  3. Keep both emails: the new confirmation and the cancellation number for the old one.

Miss the deadline and you’re usually charged one night’s room and tax, so set a reminder in the hotel’s time zone. Plot’s Hilton price drop guide has the same steps in short form, and our hotel rebooking guide explains why prices fall after booking so often.

Rebooking beats the guarantee on timing

The guarantee gives you 24 hours. A refundable rate gives you every day until the cancellation deadline, which is often weeks or months of chances for the price to fall.

Advance Purchase rates

Hilton’s Advance Purchase rates are cheaper because you pay in full when you book, at least seven days before arrival. According to Hilton’s offer terms, the discount is commonly 8% to 15% off the best available rate, or 10% to 17% for the Honors Discount Advance Purchase rate (members only). The catch: the payment isn’t refundable and the booking can’t be changed.

There is one narrow exception. For Honors Discount Advance Purchase stays in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, Hilton “may” let you cancel and book a new Honors Discount Advance Purchase reservation at a Hilton hotel in the same region. You have to call Hilton’s Advance Purchase Department (the number is in the offer terms) at least three days before check-in. The refund for the old booking comes back less a service fee:

  • $50 at Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, Hilton, Curio, Canopy, Tapestry, Tru, Embassy Suites and DoubleTree.
  • $25 at Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton, Homewood Suites and Home2 Suites.

Hilton says that refund can take up to four weeks to show on your card. It’s only worth doing when the new prepaid price is lower by more than the fee. If you’re not certain of your dates, or you think the price might fall, the flexible rate is usually the better bet.

Points stays

Hilton prices reward nights by demand. The Hilton Honors terms say pricing “may change based on factors such as the hotel, the level of daily demand, and the current room rate.” So the points price for your nights can fall after you book, the same way a cash rate can.

The Price Match Guarantee doesn’t apply to points, but rebooking does. Book the cheaper reward stay first, then cancel the original. Hilton’s general deadline for reward stays is 48 hours before arrival, though each hotel can set its own. Cancel late or don’t show up and the hotel can charge its cancellation fee, or one night’s room and tax at its best available rate if it hasn’t set one.

Fifth night free

On all-points Standard Room Reward stays of five nights or more, every fifth night is free when it’s confirmed at booking. If you rebook a long stay, make sure the new booking is also a single reservation of five or more nights, or you lose the free night.

Because a refundable points stay can be cancelled up to the hotel’s deadline, some travelers book with points first as a fallback, then switch to a cash rate if the cash price falls far enough. Book the new stay before cancelling the old one.

Plot watches cash rates, not Hilton points prices, so for points stays you’ll need to check the price yourself.

Booked through Expedia, Booking.com or another site

Bookings made through online travel agencies aren’t direct bookings, so Hilton’s guarantee doesn’t apply to them. You also cancel and change them with the site you booked on, not with Hilton.

If the rate you booked there is refundable, the same move works: book the lower price, then cancel the original on that site before its deadline. Expedia and Hotels.com ended their own price guarantee in July 2026, so rebooking is the main option there now.

Let Plot watch your Hilton rate

Forward your Hilton confirmation to Plot and Plot Pro watches your room’s cash rate until the cancellation deadline. When the same room gets cheaper, you get an alert with the new price and the steps to rebook it. Plot doesn’t watch Hilton points prices.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hilton still price match?

Yes. Book directly with Hilton, find the same room for at least 1% less on another public website within 24 hours of booking, and file a claim online. If Hilton can verify the lower price, it matches it and takes an extra 25% off the room rate for your stay. Since August 20, 2026 you have to book before you claim, and prices that need an app to view don’t count.

What changed in Hilton’s Price Match Guarantee in 2026?

For claims filed on or after August 20, 2026: you must book with Hilton first (you used to be able to claim before booking), the terms no longer offer a phone claim, prices that can only be seen in an app don’t qualify, screenshots can’t be used to approve a claim, the name and email on the claim must match the reservation, the lower total must be at least 1% cheaper including the other site’s booking fees, and Switzerland joined the countries where partner hotels are excluded. The 25% reward is unchanged.

Is the Hilton Best Rate Guarantee the same as the Price Match Guarantee?

Yes. Best Rate Guarantee is the program’s older name and many people still use it. Hilton’s page today is called the Price Match Guarantee.

How long do I have to file a Hilton price match claim?

24 hours from booking. Hilton’s FAQ says to complete the form no more than 24 hours after you book. Claims also can’t be approved once you’ve checked in, in person or with a digital key, so a claim filed close to arrival may not be reviewed in time.

Why was my Hilton price match denied?

The most common reasons are a lower price that was gone by the time Hilton checked it, a difference in the room or terms (bed type, view, prepay versus pay later, cancellation deadline, a perk on one rate but not the other), a price that needed a login, code or app to see, and a claim filed more than 24 hours after booking. Hilton must be able to verify the lower rate itself; screenshots can’t be used to approve a claim.

What if the price drops on Hilton.com after I book?

The Price Match Guarantee doesn’t cover it, because the lower price has to be on a site that isn’t a Hilton channel. If your rate is refundable, book the cheaper rate first, then cancel the original before its deadline. Hilton’s own FAQ says you can cancel an eligible reservation and book again at then-current pricing.

Can I get a lower price on a Hilton Advance Purchase rate?

Usually not. Advance Purchase rates are paid in full when you book and can’t be refunded or changed. There is one narrow exception: for Honors Discount Advance Purchase stays in the US, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, Hilton may let you cancel and book a new Honors Discount Advance Purchase reservation if you call its Advance Purchase Department at least three days before check-in. The refund comes back less a $25 or $50 service fee, depending on the brand.

Do I need to be a Hilton Honors member to file a price match claim?

No. Hilton’s FAQ says membership isn’t required. The claim must be filed by the guest named on the reservation, with the same name and email address.

Does Hilton price match if I booked on Expedia or Booking.com?

No. The guarantee only covers direct bookings: Hilton.com, the Hilton Honors app, Hilton call centers, the hotel itself, and accredited travel agents who book through a Hilton channel. Online travel agencies don’t count. If you booked through another site, that site’s own terms decide what you can do when the price drops.
