Frontier Cancellation Policy 2026: Fees, Credit, Refunds

Frontier raised its cancel fee twice in 2026. Here’s what you pay now, how to cancel, how the travel credit works, and when Frontier owes you cash instead.

TL;DR — Key takeaways

  • ✓

Cancel online in My Trips (Manage Trip) or the Frontier app, any time before the flight leaves. Don’t just skip the flight: a no-show loses the whole ticket and cancels your return too.

  • ✓

Economy, Premium and Business bundles cancel free. Basic and Standard fares pay $149 per person, per direction if booked on or after September 25, 2026 ($129 if booked June 5 to September 24, $99 before that).

  • ✓

After the first 24 hours you get Frontier travel credit, not cash. Frontier’s contract says it lasts 365 days from cancelling, for the same passenger.

  • ✓

Within 24 hours of booking, with the flight 7 or more days away, you get a full refund to your card.

  • ✓

If Frontier cancels your flight or moves it by more than 3 hours (6 international) and you don’t fly, you’re owed cash. Don’t accept credit unless you want it.

  • ✓

Fare dropped? Never use Change to move to a cheaper flight: Frontier keeps the difference. Cancel and rebook instead, when the math works.

Cancelling a Frontier flight takes a minute online. What you get back is the part that surprises people. It depends on the fare you bought, the day you bought it, and how close you are to the 24-hour mark. Frontier changed its fees twice in 2026, so a lot of what’s written about it is already out of date.

This guide uses Frontier’s own fee tables and Contract of Carriage as of October 2026. It starts with how to cancel, then covers what it costs, how the travel credit works, when you’re owed cash, and what to do when the fare drops after you book.

How to cancel a Frontier flight

On FlyFrontier.com

  1. Go to FlyFrontier.com, open My Trips and choose Manage Trip.
  2. Enter your last name and the confirmation code from your booking email.
  3. Select Cancel Booking. Before you confirm, check what the screen says you’ll get back: a refund, a credit, or nothing.
  4. Confirm, and keep the cancellation email. Your credit is tied to the confirmation code.

In the Frontier app

  1. Go to My Trips.
  2. Tap Manage My Booking on the flight.
  3. Pick the cancel option at the bottom of the screen and follow the prompts.

Before you press cancel

Booked in the last 24 hours? If the flight is 7 or more days away, this is your one chance at a full cash refund.

Cancel before departure. Frontier says a ticket has to be cancelled before the flight leaves to keep any value.

Want a cheaper flight? Don’t use Change. Frontier keeps the difference when the new flight costs less (more below).

Frontier cancellation fees in 2026

Frontier’s cancel fee depends on two things: which fare you bought, and the date you bought it. The fee is the same however far out you cancel. It is charged per passenger, per direction, so a round trip counts twice.

Date you bookedBasic or Standard fareEconomy, Premium or Business bundle
On or after September 25, 2026$149$0
June 5 to September 24, 2026$129$0
On or before June 4, 2026$99$0

Per passenger, per direction. From Frontier’s change and cancel policy, checked October 22, 2026. Frontier also lists its Bizfare and Economy Fare at $0.

Three things the table doesn’t show, all from Frontier’s cancellation help page:

  • The fee can swallow the ticket. “If the fee exceeds the ticket value, no credit is retained.” A $79 Basic fare booked today leaves you nothing when you cancel.
  • Some carrier charges stay with Frontier on top of the fee, so the credit can be a little less than you paid.
  • Frontier Miles elites (Silver and up) may have the fee waived when eligible, with the rest issued as credit.

What changed in 2026

Until June 4, 2026, the Basic cancel fee was $99. Frontier raised it to $129 for bookings from June 5, then to $149 for bookings from September 25. Your fee is set by the day you booked, not the day you cancel, so an older booking keeps its lower fee. Bundles have been free to change and cancel since Frontier introduced them in 2024.

Frontier change fees

Changing a flight (new date or time, same booking) has its own fee table. Bundles change free. Basic and Standard fares pay by how far out you are:

Date you booked (Basic or Standard)60+ days out59 to 7 days out6 days or less
On or after September 25, 2026$0$149$149
June 5 to September 24, 2026$0$79$129
On or before June 4, 2026$0$49$99

Per passenger, per direction. “6 days or less” includes same-day changes. Economy, Premium and Business bundles: $0 at every point. From Frontier’s change and cancel policy.

You also pay any difference in fare and extras when the new flight costs more. When it costs less, Frontier’s policy says “there will be no residual value available to you.” In plain terms: a change only ever moves you sideways or up in price, never down.

Travel credit: how it works and how long it lasts

Outside the first 24 hours, cancelling gets you a Frontier travel credit, not cash. Frontier keeps the cancel fee and certain carrier charges, and the rest becomes credit you can spend on a future Frontier booking.

How long it lasts

Frontier’s Contract of Carriage says the value is kept for 365 days from the date you cancel. (It was 90 days for cancellations made before May 17, 2024.) Some of Frontier’s help pages still say “most vouchers and credits are valid for 90 days,” which is probably about compensation vouchers but reads like it covers everything. Don’t guess: the expiry date is in your credit email and in My Trips. You only have to book the new trip before that date. The flight itself can be later.

The rules that catch people out

  • Same passenger only. The credit can only be used for the person on the original booking, and the name must match exactly. You can’t give it to a friend.
  • No cash, ever. A credit can’t be turned back into money.
  • Leftover value may not carry over. Frontier’s help center says its vouchers are “generally one-time use,” though some types can be reused, and your voucher email says which kind you have. Frontier doesn’t say the same about credit from a cancelled ticket either way. Upgraded Points reports that it is one-time use too: a $120 credit used on a $100 flight leaves the $20 behind. Until your credit email says otherwise, the safe move is to spend a credit on a booking at least as big as the credit.
  • To use it, book on FlyFrontier.com and pick “Credit with Frontier” at payment, then enter the confirmation code from the cancelled trip (Frontier’s steps). If the credit doesn’t cover the new trip, you pay the rest by card.

The 24-hour cancellation rule

Frontier’s contract says any ticket can be cancelled within 24 hours of purchase for a full refund to your original payment, Basic fares included, with one condition: the flight has to be at least 7 days (168 hours) after you bought it.

  • Booked 7 or more days out, cancelled within 24 hours: full refund, no fee.
  • Booked less than 7 days before the flight: even a cancellation in the first hour gets travel credit, minus any cancel fee.
  • Booked through a travel site: the US 24-hour rule applies to airlines, not to online travel agencies. Check the site’s own policy (more below).

This is the cleanest moment to act on a price drop. If the fare falls the day after you book, buy the cheaper fare first, then cancel the original inside the 24 hours. You get all your money back and keep the lower price.

Before you confirm, check that the cancel screen offers a refund to your original payment, not a travel credit. If it only offers credit and you’re sure you’re inside the window with the flight 7 or more days away, stop and contact Frontier through the chat on its help site rather than accepting the credit.

No-shows: the most expensive way to cancel

If you don’t check in or don’t board in time, Frontier treats the ticket as a No-Show Cancellation. Its help center is blunt: “There is no refund for no-shows.” Two more rules from the contract make it worse:

  • Every later flight on the booking is cancelled too, including your return.
  • The no-show charge equals the fare plus extras you bought (bags, seats), so there’s nothing left to turn into credit.

So even on a Basic fare where the fee eats most of the ticket, cancelling before departure is better than skipping the flight: it keeps any value above the fee as credit. The exception is when Frontier caused the problem. If your flight was cancelled or significantly changed and you didn’t accept the new one, the no-show charge doesn’t apply and you get a refund.

When Frontier owes you a cash refund

“Frontier tickets are generally non-refundable,” its refund page says, but there are clear exceptions where the money goes back to your original payment:

  • Within 24 hours of booking, with the flight 7 or more days away.
  • Frontier cancels your flight, for any reason, and you don’t take the rebooking.
  • Frontier significantly delays or changes it: departing more than 3 hours earlier or arriving more than 3 hours later on a domestic trip (6 hours international), and you don’t fly it.
  • A paid extra you didn’t receive, such as a service Frontier didn’t provide.
  • Death of a ticketed passenger, through Frontier’s refund request form.
  • Diamond Elite members, who may qualify when they cancel at least 24 hours before departure.

The US automatic refund rule

Since late 2024, US rules spell out what a “significant change” is and make the refund automatic. Under the Department of Transportation’s rules, a change counts when your departure moves 3 or more hours earlier, your arrival 3 or more hours later (6 for international trips), your departure or arrival airport changes, you get more connections, or you’re moved to a lower class of service. If you bought from the airline and don’t accept the new flight, a credit or other compensation, the refund is due within 7 business days for card purchases.

Don’t take the credit by accident

When Frontier changes your flight, the email or app may offer a rebooking or a travel credit first. Accepting either one ends your right to cash. If you want your money back, choose the refund, which Frontier says is fastest through its online refund and rebooking portal. Frontier says card refunds take up to 7 business days and other payment methods up to 20 days.

GoWild Pass bookings

GoWild seats open the day before departure for domestic flights, and up to 10 days before for international ones. Frontier says that once you book, its current change and cancel fees and policies apply to the itinerary. In practice:

  • Cancel as soon as you know you won’t fly, and before you check in. Frontier asks pass holders to cancel before the scheduled departure to avoid penalties.
  • The 24-hour refund won’t help on a domestic GoWild booking, because it needs the flight to be 7 or more days away.
  • Don’t no-show. Pass holders who repeatedly book and no-show face financial penalties, up to losing the pass without a refund.

Cancel for Any Reason (new in 2026)

On September 16, 2026, Frontier launched Cancel for Any Reason, an optional add-on you buy while booking on FlyFrontier.com or in the app. It lets you cancel up to 24 hours before departure and get “up to a full refund” to your original payment, depending on the refund level you pick at checkout.

Frontier hasn’t published a price, so check it at checkout. Compare it with the bundle price on the same flight: an Economy bundle already cancels free, though it pays back credit rather than cash. The add-on makes most sense when you need cash back, not credit.

Booked through Expedia or another travel site

If you bought your Frontier ticket through an online travel agency, start with them, not Frontier. The US Department of Transportation says its 24-hour refund rule applies to airlines, not travel sites, and that you should ask the agency for a refund first. Some sites offer their own free-cancellation window, so check your booking terms.

The same goes for disruption refunds. Frontier’s contract says it refunds a cancelled or significantly changed flight when it’s the merchant of record, and that refunds can go back to the travel agency that sold the ticket. If Frontier changes a flight you booked through a travel site, ask that site for the refund.

When the fare drops after you book

Frontier doesn’t match or adjust a fare after you buy, and its Change button never pays you back a difference. That leaves three real options. Whether any of them is worth it depends on your fare.

Your situationWhat to doWorth it?
Within 24 hours of booking, flight 7+ days awayBook the cheaper fare, then cancel the original for a full refundYes, for any drop
Economy, Premium or Business bundleCancel for credit (no fee), rebook at the lower fareYes, if you’ll use the whole credit
Basic or Standard fareCancel for credit (fee applies), rebookOnly if the drop beats $99 to $149 per person, per direction
Any fare, using ChangeDon’tNever: Frontier keeps the difference

Making the credit count

If your credit turns out to be one-time use, using a $200 credit on the same flight now selling for $150 can leave you with nothing to show for the drop. Two ways around that:

  • Pay for the cheaper fare by card and save the full credit for your next Frontier trip within the year. This works if you fly Frontier again.
  • Use the credit on a bigger booking for the same traveler, such as the cheaper flight plus a return or another trip, so the whole credit gets spent.

Be honest about small drops

Frontier fares are low to begin with, so most drops are small in dollars. On a Basic fare booked after September 25, 2026, the drop has to be more than $149 per person, per direction before cancelling gains you anything, and that’s rare on a fare this cheap. If you’re on Basic and outside 24 hours, the usual right answer is to keep your ticket.

Bigger drops do happen, especially on holiday and peak-date fares that were priced high when you booked. On a bundle, those are worth claiming.

Plot’s Frontier price drop guide has the same steps in short form, and our Basic Economy guide explains why the cheapest fare often costs more once plans or prices change.

Let Plot watch your Frontier fare

Forward your Frontier confirmation to Plot and Plot Pro watches the cash fare on your flight. When it drops, you get an alert with the new price and the Frontier steps for your fare: the 24-hour refund if you’re still inside it, or cancel for credit and rebook when the drop is bigger than your fee. You stay in control: Plot tells you when and how, and you decide whether to rebook.

Frequently asked questions

What is Frontier’s cancellation policy?

You can cancel any Frontier booking online before the flight leaves. Within 24 hours of booking, with the flight at least 7 days away, you get a full refund. After that you get a Frontier travel credit, not cash. Economy, Premium and Business bundles cancel with no fee. Basic and Standard fares pay a fee per passenger, per direction: $149 if you booked on or after September 25, 2026, $129 if you booked June 5 to September 24, 2026, and $99 if you booked on or before June 4, 2026.

How do I cancel a Frontier flight?

On FlyFrontier.com, open My Trips, choose Manage Trip, enter your last name and confirmation code, then select Cancel Booking and follow the prompts. In the Frontier app, go to My Trips, tap Manage My Booking on the flight, and pick the cancel option at the bottom of the screen. Cancel before the scheduled departure, or the ticket loses all its value.

Does Frontier have a 24-hour cancellation policy?

Yes. If you cancel within 24 hours of booking and your flight is at least 7 days (168 hours) away, Frontier refunds you in full to your original payment. If you booked less than 7 days before the flight, a cancellation in the first 24 hours gets travel credit minus any cancel fee instead. The US rule behind this covers bookings made with the airline, not through travel sites.

Is Frontier’s cancellation fee per person?

Yes, and per direction. A round trip for two people on a Basic fare booked after September 25, 2026 costs 4 x $149 = $596 to cancel. If the fee is bigger than the ticket, you simply get no credit back; Frontier does not bill you the difference.

Does Frontier give refunds or credit when you cancel?

Credit, in most cases. Outside the 24-hour window, a cancellation keeps the value of your itinerary, minus the cancel fee and certain carrier charges, as a Frontier travel credit. Cash refunds are for the 24-hour window, flights Frontier cancels or significantly changes, refundable purchases, and a few special cases such as the death of a passenger. Diamond Elite members may also qualify when they cancel at least 24 hours before departure.

How long does Frontier travel credit last?

Frontier’s Contract of Carriage says credit from a cancelled ticket is kept for 365 days from the date you cancel (it was 90 days for cancellations before May 17, 2024). Some Frontier help pages still say most vouchers and credits last 90 days, so check the expiry in your credit email or in My Trips. You need to book the new trip before the expiry date, not fly it.

Will Frontier refund me if it changes or cancels my flight?

Yes, to your original payment, if you don’t fly. That covers a cancelled flight, or a delay or schedule change of more than 3 hours on a domestic trip or more than 6 hours on an international one. You lose the right if you take the new flight, take the rebooking, or choose a travel credit instead. Frontier says card refunds are processed within 7 business days.

Can I cancel a GoWild Pass flight?

Yes, before departure and before you check in. Frontier says its current change and cancel fees and policies apply once a GoWild flight is booked. Because domestic GoWild seats open only the day before the flight, the 24-hour refund (which needs the flight to be 7 or more days away) won’t apply. Repeated no-shows can lead to penalties, up to losing the pass without a refund.

What if my Frontier fare drops after I book?

Within 24 hours of booking, with the flight 7 or more days away, book the cheaper fare and then cancel the original for a full refund. After that, never use Change to switch to a cheaper flight, because Frontier keeps the difference. Cancelling for credit works best on a bundle, which has no cancel fee, but the credit only pays off if you use all of it. On a Basic fare, the drop has to be bigger than the $99 to $149 fee per person, per direction.
