Delta eCredits 2026: Expiration, Lookup and How to Use

A Delta eCredit is real money, with a clock that starts earlier than most people think. Here’s how long yours lasts, how to find it, how to spend all of it, and what to do before it runs out.

TL;DR — Key takeaways

  • ✓

Cancel a ticket yourself and the eCredit lasts 1 year from the original ticket date, not from the day you cancelled.

  • ✓

Took an eCredit after Delta cancelled or badly delayed your flight? That one lasts 5 years.

  • ✓

Find credits under My Profile, Certificates, eCredits and Vouchers, or at delta.com/redeem with the eCredit or 006 ticket number.

  • ✓

Up to 5 eCredits on a new ticket, for the fare and taxes only. They stay with the traveler named on them.

  • ✓

Basic fares lose $99 to $500 when you cancel. Main Classic and up cancel with no fee on trips from the US and Canada.

  • ✓

Booked with SkyMiles? Miles go back when you cancel Main Cabin, and you can take back the difference when the miles price drops.

Cancel a Delta ticket and the money usually comes back as an eCredit. It’s worth the same as cash on a Delta flight, but it has an expiry date that runs from when you bought the original ticket, it only works for one person, and it doesn’t always show up where you expect. A 2025 WSB-TV report on eCredits “vanishing without warning” is still near the top of Google for a reason.

This guide covers Delta’s published rules first, then what travelers on Reddit and FlyerTalk report: where missing credits hide, the checkout limits, and what to do before yours expires.

How long Delta eCredits last

From Delta’s eCredit terms and its cancellation page:

How you got the eCreditValid for
You cancelled a non-refundable ticket1 year from the original ticket date, minus any cancellation fee
You changed to a cheaper flightThe difference is an eCredit on the same clock as the ticket
Delta cancelled or significantly delayed your flight and you took credit instead of a refund5 years from the date it was issued

The year starts at purchase, and it’s about travel

The clock starts on the original ticket date, not the day you cancel. And Delta says domestic tickets must be reissued and travel completed within that year; on international trips, travel must begin within it (Delta). Cancel a ticket you bought ten months ago and you have about two months to fly.

The 5-year credits came in with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s refund rules (FlyerTalk). But when Delta cancels or significantly changes your flight and you don’t want the new one, you can ask for cash back to your card instead. Turn down the eCredit and ask for a refund.

How to look up your Delta eCredit

  1. Logged in: on delta.com, open My Profile, then Certificates, eCredits and Vouchers. Only credits tied to your SkyMiles number when they were issued appear here.
  2. Anything else: go to delta.com/redeem and enter the eCredit number. You can check up to six at once.
  3. No eCredit number? Use the 13-digit ticket number from your original receipt. Delta tickets start with 006.

Keep the original booking and cancellation emails until the credit is spent. They’re the only record of the ticket number if the credit doesn’t show in your account.

How to use a Delta eCredit

  1. Search for your flight on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app.
  2. On the payment page, choose eCredits. Credits in your account are listed; add others with the eCredit or ticket number.
  3. Pay the rest with a card.

Delta’s limits

  • Up to 5 eCredits on a new ticket, and up to 2 when you pay for a change (Delta).
  • Fare and government taxes and fees only. Not checked bags or other Delta purchases.
  • No miles. eCredits can’t be used on award tickets or Miles + Cash bookings.
  • Companion Certificates combine: pick the certificate first, then add eCredits. Two certificates don’t combine.
  • Book with Delta directly. No fee on delta.com; Delta says other channels may charge one, and travel agencies and other sites can’t take eCredits.
  • Leftover value stays as an eCredit, and travelers report it keeps the original expiry date.

Can someone else use my Delta eCredit?

Generally no. An eCredit from a cancelled ticket is in the name of the traveler on that ticket, and Delta’s terms require the eCredit to match the name of the person whose ticket you’re buying. You can buy a ticket for yourself with your credit while booking others on the same trip; each traveler applies their own (r/delta).

Delta gift cards are different: anyone can use them. If you’re not sure which you have, enter the number at delta.com/redeem.

Why Delta eCredits go missing

What travelers on r/delta and FlyerTalk report, and what fixed it:

  • It isn’t in My Wallet. Credits from tickets bought without your SkyMiles number, or by someone else, don’t attach to your account. Look it up at delta.com/redeem with the 006 ticket number, or give an agent the number (r/delta, May 2025).
  • You cancelled part of a trip and the credit is already expired. The eCredit takes the date of the original purchase, so cancelling the last leg of a trip booked more than a year ago can produce a credit that’s dead on arrival (r/delta, June 2026).
  • The name doesn’t match. A middle name or hyphen that differs between your profile and the ticket can block the credit online. An agent can apply it.
  • Frontline agents say they can’t help. Travelers report better luck asking to be transferred to Delta’s ticketing support or review desk, with the 13-digit ticket number ready.

What cancelling costs, by fare

Your eCredit is the ticket value minus Delta’s fee, from Delta’s change and cancel rules:

FareCancel after 24 hours
Main Basic, Comfort BasiceCredit minus $99 to the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America; $199 elsewhere (trips from the US or Canada)
First Basic, Premium Select Basic, Basic BusinesseCredit minus $300, $400 or $500
Main Classic and above (non-refundable)Full value as an eCredit, no fee for trips within or starting in the US or Canada; up to $400 elsewhere
Extra and refundable faresRefund to your card

If the fee is bigger than the ticket, you get nothing back. And in the first 24 hours after buying from Delta, any ticket, Basic included, can be cancelled for a full refund to your card, as long as you cancel by midnight of the day after you bought it, or by midnight on the day of the first flight if that’s sooner (Delta’s risk-free cancellation).

SkyMiles bookings: getting your miles back

  • Cancel a Main Cabin or higher award on a trip starting in the US or Canada and the miles go back to your SkyMiles account with no fee. Awards starting elsewhere carry a $150 redeposit fee.
  • Basic award tickets are non-refundable; changing or cancelling one costs a fee in miles.
  • When the miles price drops, book the same flight at the lower price, then cancel the original in My Trips: the difference goes back to your account as miles, which don’t expire. On Delta-operated flights the miles price follows the cash fare, at about 100 miles per dollar of fare before taxes, so it moves as often as fares do.

Before your Delta eCredit expires

Delta doesn’t extend eCredits, so the plan is to use it in time. What travelers report works, and what doesn’t:

  • Book and fly a trip before the deadline. Even a cheap one: anything left over stays as an eCredit.
  • Once you’ve booked, change rather than cancel. If plans move, use Change Flight on the new ticket (no fee on Main Classic and up from the US or Canada). Cancelling a ticket you paid for with an eCredit just restores the old credit, minus any fee, and travelers report it comes back with its original expiry date (r/delta, December 2025).
  • Book-and-cancel resets are unreliable. Some travelers used to buy a pricier Main ticket with the credit, wait more than 24 hours and cancel to get a new one-year credit. In 2026 most report the new credit snapping back to the old date (r/delta).
  • Was the flight cancelled or changed by Delta? If you turned down the new flight, you may be owed a refund instead of the credit. Ask.

When the fare drops after you book

Delta doesn’t refund a fare difference in cash after the first 24 hours, but on Main Classic and up you can change to the same flight at the lower fare with no fee on trips from the US or Canada, and Delta gives you the difference as an eCredit. Basic pays a $99 to $199 fee, so the drop has to be bigger than that. The steps are in Plot’s Delta price drop guide.

Let Plot watch the flight you book with your eCredit

Forward your Delta confirmation and Plot Pro watches the fare, and the miles price on Main Cabin SkyMiles bookings. When it drops, you get the new price and the steps for your ticket. Plot doesn’t track your eCredit balances, so keep your Delta emails and note the expiry dates.

Frequently asked questions

How long are Delta eCredits good for?

An eCredit from a ticket you cancelled yourself is valid for 1 year from the original ticket date, not from the day you cancelled. If Delta cancelled or significantly delayed your flight and you took an eCredit instead of a refund, it’s valid for 5 years from when it was issued.

Do Delta eCredits expire before I fly or before I book?

Delta says domestic tickets bought with the credit must be reissued and travel completed within a year of the original ticket date. On international trips, travel must begin within that year. Check the date on your credit before you plan the trip.

How do I look up my Delta eCredit?

Log in on delta.com and open My Profile, then Certificates, eCredits and Vouchers. Only credits tied to your SkyMiles number when they were issued show there. For any other credit, go to delta.com/redeem and enter the eCredit number, or the 13-digit ticket number starting with 006 from your original receipt.

How do I use a Delta eCredit?

Book on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app and choose eCredits at payment. You can use up to 5 eCredits on a new ticket and 2 on a change. They pay the fare and government taxes and fees, not bags or other extras, and can’t be used on award or Miles + Cash bookings.

Can someone else use my Delta eCredit?

Generally no. An eCredit from a cancelled ticket stays with the traveler named on that ticket, and the name has to match the person you’re buying for. If you’re all on one booking, each traveler can apply their own credit.

Why did my Delta eCredit disappear?

Usually it expired, it was never tied to your SkyMiles account, or the name on your profile doesn’t match the ticket. Travelers report finding missing credits by entering the 006 ticket number at delta.com/redeem, or by calling with the ticket number.

Can I extend a Delta eCredit?

Delta doesn’t offer extensions. Travelers report that booking a ticket with the credit and cancelling it later no longer reliably resets the date, because the restored credit keeps its original expiry. The dependable option is to book and fly before the deadline.

Can I get my miles back if a Delta award ticket gets cheaper?

Yes. On Main Cabin and above for trips starting in the US or Canada, book the same flight at the lower miles price, then cancel the original in My Trips: the miles go back to your SkyMiles account with no fee. Basic award tickets cost a fee in miles to change or cancel.
